According to a report by The Kyiv Independent on Thursday, April 23, 2026, according to the Ukrainian military, twelve Federal Security Service officers were killed and fifteen others wounded in a targeted drone strike on a Russian command post in seized Donetsk.
The operation, which utilised strike drones manufactured locally, was conducted on April 22, according to Robert Brovdi, head of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces. In a message that was uploaded on Telegram, Brovdi—also known as “Madyar”—said that the facility was attacked in a series of planned and precise attacks by Ukrainian forces.
At about 8 a.m. local time that morning, residents of the occupied city of Donetsk reported hearing many explosions. Drone footage that went viral on social media seemed to show them smashing into an incomplete multi-story building that Russian security forces allegedly used as a command center.
Ukrainian defence contractor Fire Point’s FP-2 drones were reportedly involved in the strike, according to Brovdi. The drones can supposedly transport payloads weighing 60 to 100 kilos and are built for operations with a medium range. He went on to say that there were “eight precision strikes” carried out by the operatives.
Ukrainian National Guard soldiers, including those from the Azov Brigade and the Unmanned Systems Forces of the 1st Corps, worked together to complete the operation.
Russian operations in the region were allegedly coordinated by the targeted site, according to Ukrainian officials. Brovdi claims that the command post planned and executed clandestine actions, recruited new members, and sabotaged efforts to gather intelligence. Other rumours circulated that it served as a command center for Russian surrogate forces stationed in controlled territories.
The operation is a subset of a larger Ukrainian plan to degrade Russian military might in the rear. Command centers, fuel depots, and industrial facilities that back Moscow’s military operation are among the crucial infrastructure that Kyiv has been targeting with growing reliance on drone warfare.
The Ukrainian government claims Russia is launching these operations to weaken its air defence systems, interrupt supply chains, and hinder the operational capabilities of its military.
