According to a report by The Times Of Israel on May 20, 2026, the exchange of communications between Iran and the United States has continued under Tehran’s 14-point proposal, while Pakistan’s interior minister is currently in Iran to help facilitate the discussions, according to Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson.
Esmaeil Baghaei also told state television that Iran is working to establish a coordination mechanism with Oman aimed at ensuring long-term security in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.
He added that Iran is prepared to develop safety protocols for maritime traffic in cooperation with other coastal states, though he did not provide further details on how these arrangements would be implemented. The Strait of Hormuz has largely been closed to international shipping, except for Iranian vessels, since the conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel began in late February, leading to major disruptions in global energy supplies.
The United States responded last month by imposing its own blockade on Iranian ports, further escalating tensions in the region. The ongoing situation has raised concerns among global energy markets, given the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz for oil and gas shipments.
Diplomatic efforts involving regional actors are continuing as stakeholders seek to reduce tensions and prevent further escalation. Security analysts warn that prolonged disruption in the waterway could have serious consequences for global energy security, particularly for countries heavily dependent on imported fuel.
