As reported by CNBC, tensions between the United States and Iran escalated sharply on Monday as Tehran vowed a swift retaliation following the US Navy’s seizure of the Iranian-flagged cargo ship M/V Touska in the northern Arabian Sea/Gulf of Oman.
President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that the guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance intercepted the nearly 900-foot vessel after it ignored repeated warnings while attempting to breach the US naval blockade on Iranian ports.
US forces fired rounds into the ship’s engine room, disabling it, before Marines rappelled from helicopters and boarded the vessel, taking full custody.
Trump released video footage of the operation and stated the ship, reportedly sailing from China and listed on the US Treasury’s sanctions list, had refused to stop.
Iran’s highest military command, Khatam al-Anbiya, condemned the action as “armed piracy” and a blatant violation of the fragile two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan in early April.
A spokesperson declared that Iranian armed forces “will soon respond and retaliate” for the attack on a commercial vessel in international waters.
State media highlighted the incident as further proof of US aggression, while some reports noted initial Iranian drone activity near US positions, though no confirmed damage occurred.
The ceasefire, already strained by disagreements over Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, is due to expire this week.
Direct talks in Islamabad have stalled, with both sides accusing each other of bad faith. Iran had briefly reopened the strategic chokepoint before reimposing restrictions, while the US maintained its blockade.
Oil prices surged toward $96 per barrel amid fears of renewed conflict in a region that handles a significant portion of global energy supplies.
International observers urged restraint, warning that any Iranian retaliation could spark a dangerous cycle of escalation involving proxies and maritime attacks.
US officials described the seizure as necessary enforcement of the blockade, while Iran insisted it undermined diplomatic efforts. As of Monday morning, no further clashes were reported, but the region remained on high alert.
