According to Fox Tv on Monday, May 11th 2026 Matthew Whitaker has emphasized the need for stronger allied military investment and faster modernization of defense capabilities among U.S. partners, saying that global security responsibilities cannot continue to fall primarily on the United States.
Speaking during a televised discussion on international security, Whitaker referenced ongoing efforts by allied nations to rebuild military strength after years of reduced defense spending.
“They are moving quickly to try to replace assets they had let deteriorate,” he said.
His comments reflect a broader push by the administration of Donald Trump to encourage NATO and other allied partners to increase their military readiness and share more responsibility for global security operations.
Whitaker argued that the current international security structure places a disproportionate burden on the United States, particularly in high-risk regions and maritime operations.
“Right now it is a one-way street and the United States of America delivers for our allies,” he stated. “They have to show up and be capable and have to invest money.”
He further stressed that prior diplomatic agreements regarding defense spending targets must now translate into tangible military capabilities rather than symbolic commitments.
“What we accomplished last year by getting 5% political agreement has to turn into real capability,” Whitaker said.
According to him, the focus should be on rebuilding core defense infrastructure, including naval strength, armored forces, and advanced air defense systems. He noted that these capabilities are essential for responding to modern global threats and maintaining deterrence.
“Things like ships and tanks and air defense systems and those are issues we are pushing our allies hard to get that done,” he added.
Despite these concerns, Whitaker maintained that strengthening allied capabilities is essential for long-term stability and reducing reliance on U.S. military resources.
The discussion also highlights broader strategic efforts by Washington to reshape international defense partnerships, particularly in response to evolving threats across Europe, the Middle East, and maritime trade routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
