A broadcast with the Times of India (TOI) on Monday, 13 April 2026 reported that President Donald Trump launched an unusual attack on Pope Leo, while simultaneously doubling down on military and economic pressure against Iran.
In remarks that aired this morning, the President made his position on the Vatican clear: “We don’t like a pope that’s going to say that it’s okay to have a nuclear weapon. We don’t want a pope that says crime is okay in our cities. I’m not a big fan of Pope Leo. He’s a very liberal person… a man that doesn’t believe in stopping crime.”
The President’s criticism of the pontiff came alongside a stark warning to Tehran. Trump claimed Iran’s navy is effectively destroyed, with 158 ships lost and their missile manufacturing capabilities largely defeated. He reiterated, “Iran will not have a nuclear weapon,” and confirmed a blockade will go into effect at 10:00 AM tomorrow.
However, Tehran is refusing to bow. Speaking after 21 hours of intense, Pakistan-mediated talks in Islamabad, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf declared that threats do not work. Addressing President Trump directly, he said: “If you go to war, we will fight you. And if you come forward with logic, we will treat you logically.” He added that Iran is prepared to teach a greater lesson if confronted again.
The talks, led on the US side by Vice President JD Vance, ended without agreement early Sunday. Qalibaf accused Washington of making excessive demands, stating that rebuilding trust will be a long and difficult road.
