According to a report by Al Jazeera on July 10, 2026, former US Marine Corps officer Dan Grazier said the military response to Iran’s attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz has been measured, but warned that Washington should prioritize efforts to bring the conflict to an end before it escalates further.
Grazier explained that the United States has targeted Iranian military installations along the country’s southern coastline. He also noted that US forces have struck the “fast boats” Iran has used to intimidate commercial ships that Tehran has not authorised to pass through the strategic waterway.
He argued that despite the American military response, Iran continues to hold significant advantages in the region because it is operating close to its own territory. According to Grazier, Tehran does not need to launch large-scale operations to create serious challenges for its opponents.
“Iran has huge advantages where they aren’t trying to project military power far beyond their shores. They only have to take minor disruptive measures in order to create a big problem for the United States and Israel to deal with,” he told Al Jazeera.
Grazier said such tactics make the conflict especially difficult for conventional military forces to counter. He stressed that limited disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz can have wide-ranging consequences for international shipping and regional security, increasing pressure on both the United States and Israel.
He urged American policymakers to pursue diplomatic efforts alongside military operations, arguing that a prolonged confrontation would become increasingly difficult to manage.
“And so, officials here in Washington should really try to find a way to end the fighting, because this kind of asymmetric type warfare is a tricky military problem and, frankly, it’s one that the United States has not figured out yet.”
