According to Reuters, fresh Israeli airstrikes hit southern Lebanon on Wednesday, deepening concerns over an already fragile ceasefire situation. The renewed attacks come amid rising regional tensions and ongoing uncertainty about diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Iran.
Speaking at the G7 summit in France, US President Donald Trump said the recent understanding reached with Tehran is only a preliminary step and not a final peace agreement. He warned that Washington could still consider military action against Iran if the ongoing negotiations fail to meet US expectations, stressing that pressure remains part of the strategy.
The statement follows a recent memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran aimed at extending an existing ceasefire and laying the groundwork for a broader long-term deal. A formal signing is expected in Switzerland later this week. While many world leaders welcomed the progress, they also urged an immediate end to hostilities in Lebanon, where clashes involving Israel and Hezbollah continue to destabilize the region.
Despite diplomatic efforts, violence has persisted. Israel, which was not directly part of the US-Iran talks, has maintained that it reserves the right to conduct military operations whenever it deems necessary. Lebanese state media reported multiple Israeli air and artillery strikes across southern towns during the day, while security sources claimed Hezbollah carried out drone attacks against Israeli positions, though the group did not officially confirm involvement.
In Nabatieh, one of the hardest-hit areas, destruction remains extensive, with large parts of the city reduced to rubble after months of conflict. Some displaced residents had recently begun returning to assess damage, but renewed strikes have forced many to reconsider coming back.
Local officials say insecurity and lack of basic services continue to prevent proper recovery. A council representative noted that residents cannot return in meaningful numbers unless stability and essential infrastructure are restored.
The US-Iran memorandum reportedly extends an earlier ceasefire arrangement by 60 days, giving both sides more time to negotiate a potential permanent settlement. However, the full details of the agreement have not yet been made public.
At the G7 meeting, leaders from major Western nations reiterated support for diplomacy while expressing concern over Iran’s nuclear program. They emphasized that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons and pledged cooperation in enforcing any future agreement. Discussions also included plans to secure global shipping routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, if tensions ease further.
Despite these diplomatic moves, major disagreements remain. Iran continues to insist that any final deal must include an end to Israeli operations in Lebanon and a withdrawal of Israeli forces. Israel has rejected these demands, insisting it will not pull back under current security conditions.
The dispute has highlighted growing friction between Washington and Jerusalem, with reports of increasing disagreement between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over how the conflict should be resolved.
Meanwhile, global markets reacted cautiously but positively, with oil prices falling as traders anticipated reduced risks and possible reopening of key energy routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.
