According to a report by Vanguard on Monday, May 18, 2026, three worshippers were killed after gunmen opened fire at the Islamic Center of San Diego in California, triggering a major police response around the mosque complex.
Authorities said emergency teams discovered the victims outside the mosque before later finding the two suspected attackers, aged 19 and 17, dead inside a vehicle from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Police also confirmed that a security guard at the mosque was among those killed during the attack.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said officers arrived at the scene within minutes after reports of an active shooter at the Islamic centre. Police later declared the threat neutralised after searching the mosque and nearby school premises.
The imam of the mosque, Taha Hassane, said staff, teachers and children inside the mosque were safe, while expressing solidarity with affected families and condemning the attack on a place of worship.
U.S. President Donald Trump reacted to the incident, describing it as “a terrible situation.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom was also briefed on the shooting, with his office commending first responders and urging residents to follow instructions from local authorities.
