According to a report by The Punch on Monday, May 18, 2026, United States President Donald Trump has threatened to resume military strikes against Iran despite ongoing diplomatic negotiations, further escalating tensions in the Middle East amid fragile ceasefire efforts.
Trump disclosed that he had temporarily suspended plans for a fresh military assault on Iran following appeals from Gulf Arab leaders, including officials from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, who reportedly urged restraint while negotiations continued.
The US president stated that a planned military operation against Iran had been scheduled for Tuesday but was paused after Gulf allies expressed confidence that a diplomatic agreement could still be reached.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the leaders requested that Washington delay the attack because “serious negotiations” were underway and there was hope for a deal acceptable to both the United States and Middle Eastern nations.
Despite the temporary pause, Trump warned that the US military had been placed on standby and could launch a “full, large scale assault” against Iran at short notice if talks collapse or if Tehran fails to meet Washington’s conditions.
The renewed threats come amid ongoing disagreements between both countries over Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions, frozen assets, and the aftermath of recent military confrontations that triggered weeks of instability across the region.
Iran has repeatedly rejected several demands from Washington and has maintained control measures around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, causing continued anxiety in global energy markets.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed that indirect exchanges between Tehran and Washington were continuing through mediation efforts involving Pakistan.
