Rotimi Amaechi, a leading figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has said that former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar has every right to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In an interview on CHANNELS TV, Amaechi said that a candidate’s region should not be a barrier to contesting for the presidency. He argued that other factors matter more than whether a contender comes from the North or the South, and warned against excluding qualified northern politicians from the race.
Amaechi said democracy should allow any eligible citizen to run, and that shutting out candidates because of their origin would unfairly disenfranchise capable leaders.
In Amaechi’s words, “The former vice‑president has the right to contest; nobody should stop him because he’s a northerner. You can’t say to him, ‘Because you’re a northerner you’re not qualified’, you are disenfranchising northern elites who are qualified to contest for positions.”
