Political analyst Dr. Majeed Dahiru has called on opposition parties to move beyond criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms and instead present clear and workable policy alternatives.
Speaking during an interview on Nigerian Info FM, Dahiru addressed public debates surrounding the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market, noting that while these policies have generated controversy, critics must go further by proposing realistic solutions.
He stated that if opposition figures argue that the president’s policies have created hardship, they should equally explain what they would have done differently to manage the economy.
He said, “If you say that President Bola Tinubu caused problems for us because of two policies, then give us alternatives. If your party cannot give us alternatives to those two policies, then they are not deserving to lead the country.”
Dahiru also dismissed what he described as political recycling, where politicians move between parties without introducing new ideas or policy direction. He argued that many prominent political actors have previously worked within the same political structure before disagreements caused their separation, making ideological differences less clear.
According to him, the real responsibility of the opposition is not merely to criticise the government but to clearly outline a different governance path that Nigerians can evaluate.
He added that this approach would allow citizens to make informed electoral choices based on policy comparisons rather than personality-driven politics.
Dahiru concluded that a strong opposition should be defined by innovation, accountability, and constructive engagement, rather than repeated criticism without alternatives.
He emphasized that democratic progress depends on issue-based politics where parties compete through ideas rather than personal attacks or political convenience. He urged political actors to prioritise national interest and present detailed policy proposals that address economic challenges facing citizens across different sectors.
He further called for transparency and consistency in governance debate insisting that constructive opposition strengthens democracy in Nigeria and helps deliver better outcomes for the people overall He concluded firmly today.
