According to a report by The Sun on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, Shehu Gabam, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, has stated that the party did not give approval to any individual or group to represent it in recent opposition coalition discussions linked to preparations for the 2027 general elections.
He made this known during an interview on Arise News on Tuesday, where he addressed concerns surrounding the party’s alleged involvement in coalition engagements.
He clarified that any participation attributed to the SDP in such discussions did not reflect the official position of the party leadership.
Gabam dismissed reports suggesting that the Social Democratic Party was part of a coalition meeting held in Oyo State involving various opposition figures.
He stressed that the party was not formally represented at the gathering and that any claims linking SDP to the meeting were inaccurate.
According to him, the party’s structure and leadership remain intact, and no authorised delegate was sent to speak or act on its behalf at the said political engagement.
He explained that while the SDP remains open to political cooperation where necessary, such decisions must follow proper consultation and approval processes within the party.
Gabam noted that the party has not ruled out future alliances, especially if such arrangements align with national interest and party objectives.
He maintained that any potential collaboration would be approached in a structured and transparent manner rather than through informal or unauthorised channels.
The SDP chairman also addressed concerns about internal disagreements within the party, stating that such issues are common in political organisations.
He said internal disputes should not be interpreted as signs of weakness or collapse but rather as part of the democratic process within party structures.
According to him, political parties often experience differing views among members, which is not unusual in a competitive political environment.
He further stated that no major political party operates without internal challenges, adding that such situations can sometimes help strengthen organisational discipline.
Gabam explained that disagreements, when properly managed, can expose personal interests and help clarify commitment levels among members.
He emphasised that these developments are part of political growth and do not necessarily undermine the stability of a party.
Gabam admitted that the recent internal crisis within the Social Democratic Party had affected its organisational strength and operational capacity.
He noted that efforts were ongoing to reconcile aggrieved members and rebuild unity within the party structure.
He also stated that the SDP continues to function independently despite external political pressures, while working toward repositioning itself ahead of upcoming electoral activities and maintaining its ability to operate without immediate dependence on alliances.
“If there’s a need for us to do an alliance, we’ll do it. There’s no doubt about that,” he added.
