Former President Goodluck Jonathan has responded to criticisms regarding his time in office, stating that leadership should not be judged solely by age, but by actions and outcomes. He made the remarks following comments by Atiku Abubakar, who reportedly described him as inexperienced during an interview on Arise Television.
Speaking at the 2025 awards ceremony of the Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria in Abuja, Jonathan acknowledged that, like any leader, he may have made mistakes while in office. However, he stressed that every decision taken during his presidency was done in good faith and in the interest of the country.
He dismissed claims that his age at the time contributed to governance shortcomings, noting that he assumed office in 2010 at the age of 53 and left in 2015 at 58. Questioning the criticism, Jonathan asked rhetorically whether he was expected to be significantly older before being considered fit to lead. He emphasized that no president or governor can claim to have governed without errors, adding that imperfections are part of leadership.
Highlighting achievements during his administration, Jonathan pointed to Nigeria’s election into the United Nations Security Council as a sign of the country’s strong international standing at the time. He said such milestones reflected the experience and capacity of his government on the global stage.
The former president also addressed broader regional issues, particularly the need for political stability across West Africa. He warned that persistent instability among member states continues to undermine the goals of ECOWAS, especially in the area of economic development.
According to Jonathan, sustainable growth in the region cannot be achieved without stable political systems. He stressed that development and stability must go hand in hand if West African nations are to realize their full economic potential.
Favor As Higher Power?
(The hidden truth)
Some positions in life cannot be held or retained for long if you are not favored. Favor is higher power. You are not the only one desiring, deserving, connected, powerful or qualified. Some positions in life, opportunities, success, achievements, triumphs, selection, approvals, power and position, elevation, patronage, etc, are mainly through favor. Favor is silent, spiritual and higher power. For spiritual guidance, other solutions, call/Whatsapp Dr J.A. Faros on 07030514063. With God, all are possible.
