Omoyele Sowore, while speaking during an interview earlier on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, expressed his views on the ongoing debate surrounding the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He argued that simply removing the current INEC Chairman, Amupitan, would not address the deeper structural challenges affecting the electoral body.
According to him, focusing on the removal of individuals without reforming the system itself is not a sustainable solution. Sowore suggested that Nigeria’s electoral problems are rooted in a cycle that continues regardless of who occupies leadership positions within INEC.
He further explained that replacing one chairman with another would not necessarily bring improvement, as the same conditions that led to dissatisfaction in the first place would still exist. In his words, he stated: “If they remove Amupitan, another person will come and do the same thing.”
