According to a report by Vanguard on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, Atiku Abubakar has stated that he is open to supporting any consensus candidate that may emerge from the ongoing coalition discussions linked to the African Democratic Congress.
He made this position known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, where he addressed issues surrounding opposition unity, candidate selection, and the future of the coalition being formed ahead of the next election cycle.
The discussion focused on efforts within the coalition to identify a single presidential candidate capable of representing the group in future elections.
Atiku explained that the primary goal of the coalition is to build unity among participating political actors rather than promote division or rivalry.
He emphasized that the process of selecting a candidate should be guided by agreement among stakeholders, with the aim of presenting a united front that can compete effectively in the national political space.
He further noted that if a consensus candidate emerges through consultations within the coalition, such a candidate would receive his support.
He explained that the process is designed to allow members of the coalition to engage in discussions that could lead to a collective decision.

In such a situation, he stated that the coalition would move to a direct primary to determine its presidential candidate.

He added that the outcome of such a process would still be accepted by all members, including himself.

He said, “It’s not the issue of stepping aside, rather would I support? In the coalition, the first option would be to work out a consensus, if that doesn’t emerge then we go for direct primary and I will support anybody who emerges.”
