According to a report by Nigerian Tribune, on Friday April 24, 2026, there is growing tension within the All Progressives Congress as disagreement deepens between two major power groups in the party.
These groups are the APC caucus in the National Assembly and the Progressives Governors Forum, the crisis is linked to the upcoming party primaries for the 2027 general elections, many lawmakers are worried about their chances of returning to the National Assembly, some governors are also pushing to control who gets party tickets in their states.
Reports show that several senators and House of Representatives members feel betrayed, they claim there was an understanding that serving lawmakers would be supported for return tickets, however, many governors are now backing other aspirants.
The situation has created tension in many states, in Ogun State, Senator Gbenga Daniel is facing a difficult political battle, the state governor is said to have support from key stakeholders for another candidate.
In Kwara State, Senator Saliu Mustapha is also in a serious struggle with Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, there are concerns that the governor may block his return to the Senate, there are also reports that the governor is interested in influencing the ticket for Kwara Central.
In Ondo State, some federal lawmakers are also facing opposition from Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the governor is reportedly not supporting some of them for second terms in the National Assembly.
The national leadership of the APC has already said there will be no automatic tickets for any lawmaker, this position has increased anxiety among sitting legislators.
The party has released its timetable for the primaries, the House of Representatives and Senate primaries are scheduled for May 15 and May 18, the governorship primaries will follow on May 21.
Amid the growing tension, President Bola Tinubu has stepped in to calm nerves, he recently met with APC governors in Abuja.
