According to report by Punch newspaper on Thursday April 23, 2026, Labour Party’s interim national chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, has stated that Peter Obi may not be eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election under the party if he fails to meet membership registration deadlines set by law.
Speaking on Arise TV, Usman explained that the party’s membership register would be closed 21 days before its primaries and submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission. According to her, once the register is submitted, no new member can be added for the purpose of contesting elections.
She noted that Obi played a major role in the party’s rise during the 2023 elections, revealing that he convinced her and many others to join the Labour Party from the Peoples Democratic Party due to their belief in fairness and equity.
Usman also linked her defection to dissatisfaction with the PDP’s decision not to zone its presidential ticket to the south.
The Labour Party has been dealing with internal leadership disputes, which have led to court rulings affirming Usman as interim chairman. The crisis has caused defections and weakened the party’s structure. Meanwhile, the party has begun membership revalidation and zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the southern region.
