Rotimi Amaechi, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), reacted when a TV host asked what timeline he would set to tackle Nigeria’s insecurity if elected president.
Speaking in an interview with CHANNELS TV, Amaechi laughed at the question and said he could not set a fixed deadline because he is not yet president and must first assess conditions on the ground. He explained that a credible plan requires visiting troubled areas, meeting with military and security chiefs, and identifying the root causes and operational constraints before setting realistic targets.
Amaechi said the first step is to determine the problems and the possible solutions, and to learn from the military about their limitations. He added that any leader must weigh competing priorities, such as whether to focus first on security or on sectors like education, and that sequencing and resources should guide decisions rather than promises made without proper appraisal.
In his words, “You know why I’m laughing? Why would you give me a timeline? The reason why I asked that question is I’m not yet president. You have to go there and assess the situation. You have to sit with the military. The first thing is to ask: what is the problem, and what is the solution? The military will tell you; they will tell you what their handicaps are. Then you ask yourself: do I choose security or do I choose education — which comes first?”
