According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, April 17, 2026, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar believes his main reason for contesting the 2027 presidential election is simply that he comes from the North, then only people from that region may end up supporting him at the polls.
Amaechi made the remark while responding to a recent comment attributed to Atiku, in which the former vice president suggested that the North had not been fairly represented in the country’s leadership structure.
In his comments during an interview with Channels Television, Amaechi argued that Nigeria’s leadership should not be reduced to regional or ethnic considerations.
He maintained that the decision of who becomes president should be guided by wider national interests rather than identity politics.
He said the tendency to frame political ambition around where a candidate comes from could weaken national unity and limit the appeal of such a candidate beyond his own region.
According to him, election victory in a country as diverse as Nigeria requires broader acceptance than regional loyalty alone.
Amaechi further stressed that other issues should carry more weight in determining who leads the country, including competence, capacity, and the ability to serve the interests of all Nigerians.
He said such qualities matter more than attempts to rely on ethnicity or geography as political selling points.
The former minister’s remarks came in the midst of renewed political discussions around the 2027 presidential race, with debate already building over zoning, representation, and the chances of key political figures from different parts of the country.
