According to a report by the Punch on Friday, April 17, 2026, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, expressed confidence in his ability to address Nigeria’s challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections, pointing to his experience in governance and infrastructure as a key advantage.
During a televised interview, the former Rivers State governor stated that he understands the country’s problems and possesses the capacity to solve them. He highlighted projects executed during his time in office, particularly in rail development and port reforms, as evidence of his competence. He also maintained that he contributed to efforts aimed at tackling insecurity while serving in government.
Amaechi, however, criticised the current administration led by Bola Tinubu, describing the economic situation as worsening and noting that many Nigerians are facing hardship due to rising costs of living and economic pressure.
“For Christ’s sake, President Tinubu does not have the right to speak, he doesn’t,” he said, as he questioned the administration’s performance.
He further alleged that there were attempts to weaken opposition parties, stressing the importance of allowing institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission and the judiciary to operate independently to ensure credible elections.
Amaechi, now a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress, is among several political heavyweights positioning for the 2027 presidential race, alongside Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Nasir El-Rufai and Rauf Aregbesola.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the presidential election for January 16, 2027, while party primaries are expected to take place between April 23 and May 30, 2026.
