A member of the National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has rejected the use of the term “factional” in describing individuals claiming leadership positions within the party.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Okonkwo argued that merely declaring oneself as a party chairman does not confer legitimacy. He maintained that leadership positions must be attained through constitutionally defined processes and procedures, emphasizing that recognition must be rooted in due process rather than self-proclamation.
Drawing an analogy, he stated that if an individual were to declare themselves president without following constitutional requirements, such a claim would not warrant recognition or validation. According to him, the same principle applies within political parties, where legitimacy is determined by established rules and internal democratic processes.
Okonkwo also directed criticism at sections of the media, cautioning journalists against the use of language that could inadvertently legitimize what he described as unfounded claims. He urged media practitioners to exercise greater responsibility in their reporting, particularly in politically sensitive situations where terminology can influence public perception.
In addition, he defended the outcome of the ADC’s recent national convention, describing it as one of the most peaceful political gatherings in the country’s recent history. He noted that the event was conducted despite what he characterized as significant pressure, including attempts at intimidation and manipulation.
His comments come amid ongoing disputes within the party over leadership and structure, with differing claims emerging from various quarters. Observers say the debate highlights the broader issue of internal party governance and the role of due process in maintaining political stability as parties prepare for future elections.
