According to report by Vanguard on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, as political maneuvering for the 2027 Lagos governorship race gathers pace, strong indications have emerged that Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat may be positioned as the preferred successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
This followed remarks by Chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Tajudeen Olusi, a close ally of President Bola Tinubu, who repeatedly referred to Hamzat as the “incoming Governor of Lagos” during a major stakeholders’ gathering in the state.
The comment was made at the IBILE Eko Summit held at the MUSON Centre, Lagos, where key political figures, including former governor Babatunde Fashola, were present.
Observers noted that Olusi’s remarks, delivered more than once, appeared deliberate and sparked widespread speculation about an emerging consensus among Lagos political elites. Fashola’s seating arrangement beside Hamzat further fueled interpretations of subtle endorsement signals.
Although Hamzat has yet to formally declare his candidacy, his increasing political consultations and visible engagements with party leaders suggest growing momentum.
Reports indicate that both Governor Sanwo-Olu and influential figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC), including members of the GAC, are backing him as a consensus candidate. His supporters, among them lawmaker James Faleke, have also begun mobilizing ahead of party primaries.
Hamzat, an engineer with over two decades of governance experience, has served in various capacities, including commissioner under Tinubu and in key roles during Fashola’s administration. His political strength is further tied to the Justice Forum, a longstanding political bloc founded by his late father.
Meanwhile, discussions at the summit extended beyond politics. Sanwo-Olu emphasized inclusive urban development, noting that rapid urbanisation must align with the needs of indigenous communities. Fashola also called for reforms in housing, transport, and data systems to better manage Lagos’ growth.
