BREAKING: Ikechukwu Exposes “₦500 Politics” and T-Shirt Election Tactics

In a recent interview shared by Arise News, Professor of Strategic Management and Human Capital Development, Professor Okey Ikechukwu, highlighted concerns about the commercialization and superficiality of political engagement in Nigeria, especially during election periods.

He described how political activities often reduce complex democratic processes into temporary, transactional moments rather than sustained civic participation. In his words: “When it’s election time, you struggle to get as many T-shirts as you can, and at any party rally, you go and get a meat pie and ₦500.”

According to him, such practices reflect a deeper challenge in the political system where voter engagement is frequently driven by short-term incentives rather than ideological commitment, policy debates, or structured party mobilisation. He noted that this pattern weakens genuine political education and limits the development of strong grassroots party structures across the country.

The professor further argued that meaningful democracy requires consistent engagement between elections, not just during campaign seasons when attention is drawn by rallies and material distributions. He stressed that when political participation is reduced to giveaways and symbolic items, it becomes difficult to build lasting trust between citizens and political institutions.

He called for a shift toward deeper political awareness, stronger party organisation, and more issue-based engagement as Nigeria prepares for future elections, including the 2027 general polls.
