A member of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, has questioned the widely held belief that the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, formally resigned from the party, insisting that there is no publicly available evidence to support such a claim.
Arabambi made the comments during an interview on News Central TV, where he challenged narratives surrounding Obi’s political status and his transition into active opposition politics under the Labour Party platform during the 2023 general elections.
According to him, Obi’s departure from his former political engagements has not been properly documented in the same way as other high-profile political defections in Nigeria. He argued that official resignations and party exits by prominent politicians are usually recorded and broadcast publicly, making them verifiable.
“He (Peter Obi) didn’t resign. Please, can any of you show me video or clip when he resigned from the Labour Party? No TV station has it,” Arabambi stated, questioning the authenticity of claims that Obi formally announced his exit from prior political arrangements.
He contrasted Obi’s case with those of other prominent Nigerian politicians whose party movements have been widely documented and circulated across media platforms. According to him, several political figures have made their resignations or defections public through televised announcements or widely shared footage.
“But we have that of Nasir El-Rufai, we have that of the former governor of Sokoto, we have that of Atiku Abubakar, we have that of Rotimi Amaechi,” he said, referencing politicians whose political transitions he claimed were publicly documented.
Arabambi’s remarks appeared to suggest that Obi’s political movements lack the level of procedural transparency typically associated with major party changes in Nigeria’s political environment. He implied that this absence of visible documentation raises questions about the nature and timing of Obi’s political realignments.
The Labour Party member further described Obi’s political style in metaphorical terms, suggesting that the former Anambra State governor operates in a way that is difficult to track or clearly define within conventional party structures.
“Obi is like a political mascot that will cover his head and you won’t know he’s the one moving,” Arabambi concluded, using a figurative expression to characterize what he described as Obi’s discreet or unconventional approach to political engagement.
His comments add to ongoing internal debates within the Labour Party following the 2023 general elections, which saw Obi emerge as a major opposition figure with significant youth support and a strong electoral showing.
