The Kwankwasiyya movement has slammed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, claiming that his political relevance is tied strictly to party structures rather than genuine personal popularity.
The movement’s spokesperson, Honorable Abdulmuminu Melu, insisted that unlike Atiku, only Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso possess “organic” followers who are not influenced by money or party machinery.
Speaking on TrustTV this Friday, April 17, 2026, the movement was reacting to Atiku’s earlier claims that Kwankwaso’s influence is limited to Kano State.
Melu argued that Atiku’s high vote counts in past elections were only possible because he ran under the well-structured platform of the PDP, which enjoyed elite consensus and the backing of sitting governors.
Melu highlighted that Kwankwaso garnered nearly 1.5 million votes in the 2023 elections under the relatively unknown NNPP, describing it as a “purely organic vote” that belongs to the candidate, not the party.
He stated: “As it is today, it is only Peter Obi and my principal that have organic followers that are not induced by anything rather than the belief in their ability to deliver Nigeria.”
The spokesperson further suggested that if Kwankwaso had the backing of PDP’s governors and resources, his numbers would have far eclipsed Atiku’s.
He dismissed the former Vice President’s assessment of the political landscape, describing it as being “in sharp contrast to the reality on the ground.”
This heated verbal exchange signals a deep rift within the opposition coalition as they attempt to form a common front for 2027.
By grouping Peter Obi and Kwankwaso together as the only “organic” leaders, the Kwankwasiyya movement is subtly positioning Atiku as a “yesterday’s man” whose influence is tied more to his wealth and structures than to the masses.
