According to a report by The Vanguard on Monday, April 27, 2026, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a sharp response to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde following his controversial comments at a recent opposition summit in Ibadan.
The ruling party declared the Governor “unworthy of his office” after he invoked the historical “Operation Wetie” to criticize the current political climate.
Speaking at the summit of opposition leaders, Governor Makinde cautioned against the unchecked consolidation of legislative power.
He explicitly referenced “Operation Wetie,” the infamous period of political violence in Nigeria’s Western Region during the 1960s, as a warning.
The term refers to a dark era marked by the systematic burning of properties and political opponents.
In a formal statement released on Sunday, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, condemned the remark as reckless incitement.
The party argued that such rhetoric from a sitting Chief Security Officer of a state is dangerous and risks fueling anarchy and lawlessness.
Morka emphasized that while governors enjoy constitutional immunity from prosecution, that protection does not equate to immunity from accountability regarding threats to national security.
Beyond the specific condemnation, the APC dismissed broader fears of a one-party state, turning the focus back to the opposition’s internal challenges.
The party accused political figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, of deepening instability within their own parties, asserting that the opposition’s current struggles are self-inflicted.
The APC reaffirmed its readiness for the 2027 elections, pledging to continue supporting President Bola Tinubu’s agenda while dismissing the opposition’s coalition efforts as ineffective.
The party has called on security agencies to monitor the situation, signaling a toughened stance against political rhetoric they deem threatening to national stability.
