According to report by Vanguard News on Sunday, April 20, 2026, the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has deepened into a fierce internal struggle, with three opposing factions battling for control of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
What began as disagreements over leadership has now evolved into a high-stakes political conflict, with each group determined to emerge dominant.
The dispute mainly involves camps aligned with David Mark, Nafiu Gombe, and Dumebi Kachikwu, alongside his associate Kingsley Temitope Ogga.
Each faction has accused the others of acting unlawfully and attempting to seize control of party structures.
Supporters of the Mark-led group have gone further to allege that some rivals are being influenced by the ruling government and the APC to weaken the party and support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
However, both the presidency and APC have dismissed these accusations, instead blaming the ADC leadership for internal disorganization.
Tensions escalated after a Federal High Court ordered all parties to maintain the status quo and halt any congresses or conventions pending legal decisions.
Despite this directive, a convention organized by the Mark faction went ahead, worsening divisions. Kachikwu condemned the move, describing it as reckless and capable of destabilizing both the party and the country.
While the Mark faction insists it followed due process and acted within constitutional provisions, the Gombe group has rejected this claim, arguing that the leadership changes violated party rules and lacked legitimacy. Gombe maintains he rightfully assumed leadership after the former chairman’s exit.
Meanwhile, Kachikwu’s bloc has dismissed both sides as illegitimate, positioning itself as a reform-driven alternative.
With ongoing court cases and no clear resolution, the ADC now operates as three parallel factions. Observers warn that the prolonged crisis could weaken the party’s chances as a credible opposition force in 2027.
