According to a report by Daily Post on Monday, April 20, 2026, a political scientist and public affairs analyst, Udenta Udenta, has shared his perspective on the possible direction of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a programme on Sunday Politics, he explained that the opposition may have a stronger chance if it adopts a balanced presidential ticket that reflects both regional and political considerations.
His comments come at a time when political discussions across the country are gradually shifting toward the next election cycle.
According to Udenta, one of the key figures in the opposition landscape is Peter Obi, whom he described as a strong southern candidate with significant visibility and support.
He noted that Obi’s influence in southern Nigeria positions him as a major contender in any future coalition arrangement.
However, he emphasized that success in a national election would depend on more than individual popularity, pointing out the importance of forming alliances that can appeal to voters across different regions.
He further explained that pairing a southern candidate like Obi with a credible northern running mate could improve the opposition’s chances against the incumbent president, Bola Tinubu.
In his view, Nigeria’s political structure often requires a balance between the northern and southern regions to secure widespread electoral support.
He suggested that such a combination could help unify diverse voter groups and strengthen the opposition’s ability to compete effectively at the national level.
Udenta also highlighted the current political environment, stating that it may favour the emergence of a broad-based opposition alliance.
He pointed out that cooperation among different political actors could play a significant role in shaping the outcome of the election.
By bringing together various interests under a common platform, he believes the opposition could present a more coordinated challenge to the ruling party.
This approach, he noted, would require careful planning and agreement on shared goals among the parties involved.
In addition to political strategy, Udenta addressed the role of economic conditions in influencing voter behaviour.
He suggested that the state of the economy could become a major factor as the 2027 elections approach.
According to him, public perception of economic performance often shapes electoral decisions, and dissatisfaction among citizens may affect support for the current administration.
He indicated that comparisons between past and present conditions may play a part in how voters assess leadership.
He said, “How were we on May 29, 2023, and how are we today? The response will be clear: We are in a worse situation today than we were under the Buhari presidency.”
