In an interview on Channels TV, on Friday, June 10, 2026, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s extended arrest, according to Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s national publicity secretary, is politically driven rather than stemming from incidents that transpired while he was in office.
The ADC backs the prosecution of anyone with a valid case to answer, Abdullahi stated during the interview.

The opposition, he claims, thinks the current administration is planning to put El-Rufai in prison until after the next general election so that he can continue to exert his political influence. The release of El-Rufai, he said, would fortify the opposition and give the ruling party a political headache.
According to Abdullahi, El-Rufai’s family has informed him that the former governor was admitted to the National Hospital not long ago, and that physicians there purportedly recommended that El-Rufai remain under medical monitoring because his condition is worsening.
He voiced his disapproval of the situation’s management and threatened legal action against the federal government in the event that anything were to happen to him while he was in custody.
He went on to say that El-Rufai’s case is being handled differently because of his political status, and that other politicians who have been accused have been freed.
