According to a video posted on Al Arabiya on Friday July 10, 2026, Paul Glastris, former chief speechwriter to President Clinton, said he does not think the president has a lot of cards left to play against Iran right now.
Glastris made the remark while responding to his fellow panelist Greg Swenson during a discussion on Al Arabiya English about the state of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
The conversation followed reports that Iran’s army had targeted American military assets in Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain, after Iran reportedly struck three cargo ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The host noted that President Trump had called the ceasefire fragile while still describing the Iranians in harsh terms.
Glastris pushed back directly on Swenson’s more optimistic assessment of the administration’s leverage.
In his words, Glastris said, “I think we are at where we’ve always been, which is the president I don’t think does, apologies to Greg, have a lot of cards.
“Iran signed a very rickety MOU to get a rickety ceasefire. Iran has from the beginning been very clear that it’s going to hold on to the Strait of Hormuz.
“The United States doesn’t want that. It doesn’t really have the ability to stop it. It’s trying to throw some kinetic power at Iran.
“I don’t think it’s going to work. We’ll probably be back at some point soon to where we were before,” he said.
Glastris went on to argue that Iran is now in a stronger strategic position than before the war began, and that President Trump is caught in a situation he cannot easily change without a large ground invasion, an option Glastris said the public would not tolerate.See more
