According to a report by The Punch on Thursday, April 23, 2026, the Senate has officially called on the Federal Government to consider suspending all political activities across eight frontline states to address the escalating security crisis in the country.
This urgent motion was raised by the lawmaker representing Bauchi Central, Senator Abdul Ningi, during Wednesday’s plenary session.
Senator Ningi emphasized that the government can no longer afford to treat the current insecurity as a secondary issue.
He specifically identified Borno, Plateau, Bauchi, Benue, Niger, Sokoto, Kebbi, and parts of Kano as regions where the security situation has become untenable.
According to the lawmaker, political activities in these areas should be halted until the government can guarantee the safety of lives and properties.
This move follows a resurgence of insurgent attacks, which lawmakers described as a serious threat to national stability.
The Upper Chamber expressed deep concern over coordinated assaults on military formations and the plight of 416 women, children, and elderly citizens reportedly abducted by insurgents in Borno State since late March.
With the insurgents issuing fresh threats via video, the Senate warned that the situation requires immediate, decisive intervention.
In response to the motion sponsored by Senator Tahir Monguno, the Senate condemned the attacks and observed a minute of silence in honour of fallen soldiers.
The Chamber resolved to demand a comprehensive operational and logistical audit of the affected military formations to identify and close gaps in strategy.
Lawmakers also urged the Armed Forces to strengthen their rules of engagement and ensure the protection of civilians during operations.
The Senate concluded by calling on local communities to support security agencies with credible and timely intelligence, emphasizing that restoring peace must remain the top priority.
