According to report by The Nation News on Thursday, April 23, 2026, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has been brought before the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations that he was involved in illegally intercepting the phone communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
During Thursday’s proceedings, El-Rufai was formally arraigned and presented with an amended five-count charge, identified as FHC/ABJ/99/2026, before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik. He denied all the allegations, entering a plea of not guilty to each count.
The court session, however, experienced a delay while arguments were being made regarding his bail application.
The presiding judge discovered that a document referenced by El-Rufai’s counsel, Oluwole Iyamu (SAN), was missing from the court’s official file. This prompted concern, as the document was considered relevant to the ongoing proceedings.
Following this development, Iyamu requested a short adjournment to allow the defence team properly file the document. The prosecuting counsel, Oluwole Aladeloye (SAN), did not oppose the request.
Consequently, Justice Abdulmalik agreed to temporarily stand down the matter, giving the defence time to ensure that all necessary documents were correctly submitted and included in the court records.
The case, which has attracted significant public attention due to the high-profile individuals involved, centers on claims of unauthorized surveillance targeting a top government official.
While the details of the allegations are yet to be fully explored in court, the charges suggest serious concerns about privacy breaches and abuse of power.
