Presidential aspirant of the National Democratic Coalition, Peter Obi, has said he is not preoccupied with speculation surrounding other possible contenders in the presidential race, including former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Obi made the remarks while speaking to journalists after his presidential screening by the NDC committee in an interview aired by Symfoni TV on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
Responding to questions about potential competitors in the race, Obi said his primary focus remained on addressing Nigeria’s challenges and rebuilding national unity. “I am not in any way going around looking for who and who is contesting. I am concentrating on how to build a better Nigeria,” he stated.
The former Anambra State governor said the country could only move forward if it became more united and inclusive in line with constitutional provisions.
“By first uniting the country because it is not a united country today. We have to govern the country by the constitution of Nigeria which stipulates that there is a federal character where you have to make sure that it is inclusive,” Obi said. “The country must be united. The country must be secured,” he added.
Obi also expressed concern over insecurity across the country, particularly attacks affecting schools and communities, saying Nigerians should be able to move freely without fear. “We want to see where mothers can no longer fear when their children go to school. They can no longer fear when their children go to work,” he stated. “And where we can travel all over Nigeria without fear,” he added.
The presidential aspirant further highlighted worsening economic hardship and hunger in the country, noting that many Nigerians struggle daily to survive. “We have to think about how to feed the people of Nigeria. So many Nigerians today go to bed not knowing where the next meal will come from tomorrow. That must change,” Obi said.
He also pledged to fight corruption and ensure public resources are managed transparently for the benefit of citizens. “We must live in a country where people do not turn public assets and public wealth into their private assets,” he stated. “So we must fight corruption to a standstill and make it work for everybody,” Obi added.
Reiterating his vision for governance, Obi said Nigeria should become a country where success is based on merit rather than political connections. “A Nigeria where, like I say every day, a child of nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody,” he said.
The former governor also promised greater accountability and communication with citizens if elected into office. “A Nigeria that works for all and our commitment is total, where whatever those who are aspiring, like I’m doing, or contesting say they will do it,” Obi stated.
“And if they don’t do it, nobody expects 100 percent results. We want to see 100 percent effort and where necessary, communicate with the people,” he added.
Obi said leaders must remain transparent during periods of crisis and regularly brief citizens on government actions. “So I’ll be talking to Nigerians. If there’s killing, I have to tell them why, what we are doing to mitigate that, to ensure that it doesn’t happen,” he said.
He criticised political leaders for focusing on elections while insecurity continues to claim lives across the country. “Where you wake up every day in Nigeria, all you hear is about killing. Nigerians dying every day without anybody caring. Politicians are preoccupied by the next election when Nigerians are dying,” Obi stated.
