A fresh controversy has emerged in Kaduna following the reaction of Bashir El-Rufai, son of former governor Nasir El-Rufai, to a condolence message sent by Governor Uba Sani.
The governor had issued a formal statement mourning the death of Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, the mother of the former governor.
He described her as a respected matriarch who lived a life of service and compassion.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Kaduna State, I extend my deepest condolences to His Excellency, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and the entire El-Rufai family on the passing of their beloved mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai,” the governor said.
He went further to highlight her personal qualities. He noted that she was known for her humility, wisdom, and dedication to her family and community.
“Hajiya Umma El-Rufai was not only a devoted mother and matriarch, but also a woman of rare grace, moral clarity, and quiet strength,” he stated.
“She lived a life defined by compassion, humility, and steadfast service… In her community, she was a steady source of counsel and reconciliation,” the statement added.
Governor Sani also prayed for the repose of her soul. He asked God to grant the family strength in this period of grief.
“I stand in solemn solidarity with the El-Rufai family, praying that Almighty Allah will forgive her shortcomings, accept her righteous deeds, and grant her eternal repose in Aljannatul Firdaus,” he said.
However, the message did not sit well with Bashir El-Rufai. In a short and direct reaction posted online, he rejected the condolence.
“Bama so,” he wrote.
The phrase, in Hausa, means “we don’t want.” The brief response has since stirred reactions, especially given the existing tension between supporters of the former governor and the current administration in Kaduna State.
