According to a report by footballTransfers on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Manchester United are stepping up their summer transfer plans after sealing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League and confirming Michael Carrick as their permanent manager.
The club’s rebuild is already taking shape, with midfield reinforcement identified as a top priority. United are expected to recruit at least two new midfielders as they look to strengthen the core of the squad ahead of the new campaign. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson was originally high on their list after a strong individual season that drew widespread attention.
However, fresh developments suggest Anderson is now close to a move to Manchester City, forcing United to rethink their approach in the transfer market. As a result, Atalanta midfielder Ederson has emerged as a leading alternative and negotiations are reportedly moving at pace.
Sky Sports reports that discussions between both clubs have reached an advanced stage. The Brazilian, who is in the final year of his contract, is expected to cost around €40.5 million, with an additional €3.5 million in add-ons depending on performance-related clauses. The deal is believed to be nearing completion.
Once that transfer is concluded, Manchester United are expected to intensify their interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, who has become a key figure in Carrick’s long-term squad planning.
Newcastle’s failure to secure European football for next season has raised doubts over the futures of several players, including Tonali. While Arsenal and Manchester City are also tracking him, Newcastle are reportedly demanding a fee close to €100 million.
Even with the high valuation, United are said to be ready to make a significant push, with early indications that personal terms may already be aligned.
Meanwhile, Newcastle are preparing for the possibility of his departure and are monitoring potential replacements, with Inter Milan youngster Aleksandar Stanković among those under consideration.
At Old Trafford, there is growing belief that Tonali could still become a central part of Carrick’s new project as United continue reshaping their midfield ahead of next season.
