Charles Omole has claimed that unelected individuals around former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari held enormous influence during Buhari’s administration.

Speaking during an interview on Edmond Obilo’s podcast, Omole said some people close to the president became more powerful than many elected officials. He specifically mentioned Tunde Sabiu, popularly known as Tunde, whom he said gained influence because of his close relationship with Buhari.

According to Omole, Tunde became even more powerful after the death of former Chief of Staff Abba Kyari. He alleged that after Kyari’s death, members of a powerful inner circle within the presidency began using Tunde to move documents and approvals directly to Buhari.

Omole also spoke about Ibrahim Gambari, who succeeded Kyari as Chief of Staff. He said Gambari was not part of the alleged cabal and remained loyal only to Buhari.

According to him, Gambari reportedly resisted pressure from powerful figures within the presidency, which led to some officials bypassing his office entirely. Omole claimed that certain approvals reached Buhari without passing through the official process supervised by Gambari.

He argued that the situation showed how powerful presidential aides and close associates can become in government, even though Nigerians only vote for the president during elections.
