According to a report by The Pride of London on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Chelsea’s impending appointment of Xabi Alonso signals the beginning of a ruthless rebuild at Stamford Bridge, with sweeping changes expected once the Spaniard officially takes charge on July 1.

After a humiliating season that ended with the Blues missing out on Europe while nine Premier League rivals secured continental qualification, Alonso inherits a squad badly in need of transformation.

Reinforcements are expected across multiple positions, but the left flank is quickly emerging as one of the club’s biggest concerns.

Alejandro Garnacho, signed from Manchester United just last year, is already being linked with an exit, while Jamie Gittens is also facing an uncertain future amid doubts over whether he fits Alonso’s demanding 3-4-2-1 system.

Chelsea are now hunting for a top-level left-sided attacker capable of complementing Cole Palmer and operating behind Joao Pedro — and Rafael Leao has emerged as a serious target.

Chelsea handed cut-price Rafael Leao opportunity

Leao has long been admired by Premier League clubs and for good reason.

The AC Milan winger has spent years terrorising Serie A defences with his explosive pace, physical dominance and devastating ability in one-on-one situations.

Operating primarily from the left, the Portugal international has registered an outstanding 145 goal involvements in 291 appearances for Milan, delivering elite-level output with remarkable consistency.

Although Leao endured an inconsistent 2025/26 campaign due largely to fitness setbacks, Milan could now be prepared to cash in for a surprisingly modest fee despite the €120m (£104m) release clause in his contract.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Luca Bianchin, Galatasaray are already pushing aggressively to sign the winger.

“Il Galatasaray è pronto a offrire un contratto da 10 milioni più bonus a stagione a Rafa Leao.

Derby turco con il Fenerbahçe, che per Rafa si è mosso nei giorni scorsi.

Nessun contatto ancora con il Milan. Possibile prezzo tra i 40 e i 50 milioni.”

The report claims Milan could accept a fee between €40m and €50m — roughly £43m — which would represent a stunning market opportunity for Chelsea.

For only slightly more than the £40m spent on Garnacho, Alonso could secure a genuinely world-class forward capable of transforming Chelsea’s attack overnight.

The prospect of Chelsea lining up with Cole Palmer, Rafael Leao and Joao Pedro in attack next season is enough to excite supporters already.

And Alonso may now be tempted to use his Real Madrid connections and influence to make the move happen.

Leao’s reputation is only continuing to grow internationally, and comments previously made by Luka Modric underline just how highly the Portuguese star is rated inside elite football circles.

“Rafa is really amazing,” Modric said. “I was looking forward to playing with him, unfortunately he got injured quickly, but now he’s getting back to fitness. This is the Rafa that we need.

“He’s an amazing talent, from outside when I used to watch him and now when I train with him, I see he is one of the best players in the world. The incredible thing is that he can still improve, it just depends on him.

I hope these two goals can help him grow his confidence and be the main guy for us, he will be very important and we will depend a lot on him. He showed why tonight.”

Coming from Modric — one of the defining midfielders of his generation and Alonso’s former Real Madrid teammate — those words carry enormous weight.

And if Chelsea truly want to return to the elite under Alonso, signing a game-breaker like Leao could be the statement move that launches a new era at Stamford Bridge.
