According to a report by The Vanguard on Monday, June 1, 2026, the Federal Workers Forum (FWF) has officially rejected the proposed N100,000 national minimum wage, describing it as a “Greek gift” that fails to address the severe economic realities currently crushing Nigerian workers.
In a joint communiqué signed by National Coordinator Andrew Emelieze, National Secretary Ayo Ogundele, and National Mobilisation Officer Aminu Yerima, the forum slammed state governors who are reportedly canvassing for the new amount.
The FWF points out the contradiction in the governors’ actions, stating that the proposal is insufficient to serve as a proper living wage.
“To us, this is the height of hypocrisy. These same governors, most of whom said they could not afford the N70,000 minimum wage, are now proposing N100,000,” the forum declared.
The communiqué explains that the previous implementation of the N70,000 wage fell completely short of expectations.
According to the forum, a uniform addition of only N40,000 was applied across grade levels, which was then further depleted by various salary deductions.
Furthermore, civil servants are still grappling with unpaid promotion arrears, outstanding wage awards, and non-implemented peculiar allowances.
Reacting to the dual crisis of economic hardship and worsening insecurity, the FWF has issued a strict 30-day ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu to secure the country and stabilize living conditions.
The body warns that citizens are living in daily fear of kidnappings and violent crimes, with schools increasingly becoming major targets.
Consequently, the forum has mandated the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to immediately initiate an indefinite nationwide strike to protest the ongoing national challenges.
