Dino Melaye, a prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has expressed concern over the state of Nigeria’s judiciary, arguing that the challenges facing opposition parties are not merely the result of internal weaknesses, but also the misuse of public institutions.
Melaye made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, while responding to questions about the internal crises affecting opposition parties and the broader political climate in the country.
Reacting to suggestions that the African Democratic Congress and other opposition parties may be suffering from internal fragility, the former Kogi West senator rejected the claim. He argued that the deeper problem lies in the way key institutions of governance are allegedly being used to influence political outcomes and suppress fairness.
According to him, when institutions that are expected to uphold justice and neutrality are used in ways that undermine the rule of law, political competition becomes distorted and democratic values are weakened.
Melaye also raised concerns about the judiciary, saying the courts are not currently in the best condition to inspire public confidence. As a legal practitioner, he said he finds the present state of the judicial system troubling, particularly in light of some recent court decisions.
“I’m a lawyer, but our courts are not in the best state in this country today,” he said, adding that several judgments in recent times have, in his view, diminished public trust in the justice system.
He further criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing the electoral body of failing to maintain the neutrality expected of it. To illustrate his point, he likened the situation to a football match in which the referee openly supports one of the competing teams.
His comments have added to the growing criticism from opposition figures who argue that democratic institutions must remain independent and impartial if the country’s political process is to retain credibility.
Melaye’s remarks are likely to fuel further debate over the role of the judiciary and electoral bodies in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, especially as tensions continue to rise ahead of future political contests.
