Segun Sowunmi has strongly criticised a faction within the Peoples Democratic Party, warning that attempts to dominate the party could backfire if not checked.
Speaking during an interview on The Volume Pod, Sowunmi, who once served as spokesperson to Atiku Abubakar during the 2019 presidential campaign—did not hold back in his remarks about the group aligned with Nyesom Wike. He stated bluntly, “The Wike faction deceives itself thinking it owns everything; they’ll learn a hard lesson.”
He argued that such a mindset runs contrary to the founding ideals of the PDP, which he described as a party built on inclusiveness, shared leadership, and collective responsibility. According to Sowunmi, no single bloc has the right to claim total control, as doing so risks alienating other stakeholders and weakening the party’s foundation.
The PDP chieftain emphasised that internal unity remains critical to political success, particularly in a competitive environment like Nigeria’s. He warned that unresolved disputes and power struggles often translate into poor electoral outcomes, as divided parties struggle to present a strong and united front to voters.
Sowunmi further noted that effective politics requires compromise, dialogue, and mutual respect among party members. He urged leaders within the PDP and other opposition groups to move away from prolonged factional conflicts and instead focus on rebuilding trust and strengthening party structures.
In his view, internal crises not only distract from addressing national challenges but also diminish the credibility of opposition parties seeking to provide alternatives to the ruling government.
Concluding his remarks, Sowunmi cautioned that any party that fails to uphold internal democracy risks eventual collapse. He called on the PDP to learn from past experiences and embrace genuine reforms, stressing that only through unity and inclusiveness can the party remain relevant and competitive ahead of future elections.
