The All Progressives Congress is reportedly strengthening its political hold in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with indications that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, may influence the emergence of the party’s candidate despite remaining a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.
According to The Punch, former House of Representatives Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, and Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Alabo Dakorinama George Kelly, both believed to be loyal to Wike, were screened smoothly by a committee led by APC Deputy National Chairman, Benjamin Nwoye.
However, party insiders claimed Governor Siminalayi Fubara received a less welcoming reception during his screening, which was said to be unusually brief. Sources linked the development to his strained relationship with Wike, who is believed to enjoy the support of President Bola Tinubu and the APC leadership.
The insiders further alleged that the party structure in Rivers has effectively been placed under Wike’s control, increasing the chances of any aspirant backed by him securing the APC governorship ticket.
Attempts by our correspondent to get reactions from the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, and his deputy, Duro Meseko, were unsuccessful, as both officials did not respond to calls before the report was filed.
Meanwhile, an aide to Governor Siminalayi Fubara told The PUNCH that the governor’s screening session was brief because the committee cleared him almost immediately.
Fubara’s aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, stated, “The governor has been cleared.
“There was nothing much to ask him, you know, as an incumbent governor. So, he was immediately cleared and asked to take a bow and go.”
When he was asked why the Governor appeared unhappy, and declined to speak to the media after the screening, he stated, “Everyone has the right to speak or not to speak to the press and there is nothing wrong with that. What’s important is that the governor has been cleared by the committee.”
